I am very sensitive as well in my 6th chakra. You should try a grounding breath.
Breathe into the space above your crown, in through your nose. As you exhale out your mouth - do it in short little gentle burst. Focus the energy down to your third eye, then throat, then heart, then solar plexus, then below navel and then root - exhaling completely to the core of the earth. feel the energy surge up from the mama and do it again as many times as you need but at least three.
I had energy stuck in my crown for 2 days and this worked for me. I had to use the grounding breath for about 10 minutes.

My guides are chating with yours. They say you are going through a kundalini cleansing from the top down. This processs is called initiation and will continue till it has worked the blocks in all your chackras. As was sugessed do gounding excersises. Also ask the Archangel Michael and Raphael to help empty out these chackras that are in pain. Surrender these blokages to God and pray for less pain in the cleasing and initiation process. Oh yes and FYI the initiation will start to engage th higher psychic funtions very soon.

The crown chakra is the chakra of your divine purpose and destiny. It balances the interior and exterior and brings them into a harmonious whole. Is your outer self a true reflection of your inner self...or are you following someone else's plan...so to speak?
The mantra to help you heal this chakra is AUM...stones that can help are amethyst, quartz and sugalite.

If you are unfamiliar with the stones go to a metaphysical store...ask about the stones that grab your attention...they will most likely be the ones you need.

If you don't resonate with any of the above and truly feel you are just taking in the sarrow and negativity of others than...yes ask the Archangels to assist you. Ask Archangel Raphael for guidance in your communications with the Divine, and to help you to balance, heal, and adjust your chakras to
the appropriate size; ask Archangel Raziel, who governs the third eye and sight to clear away all confusion so that you may see the cause; ask Archangel Michael to assist you with your lift purpose and to shed light onto fears of moving forward...imagine his sword releasing the snare of fear. He also cuts through all negative energy and protects all those who call on him.

(Ironically...just by calling on the Archangels you will be working with your third eye and crown chakras :0)

I've been through a similar experience.

in my case and experience, when "third eye" is getting stronger it tries to destroy a layer of "false views", pain comes from this process but it may happen that those false views are strong and resist to be destroyed so the pain persists... you must be prepared to face whatever it is trying to show however sordid it may be and be prepared to drop concepts, beliefs and even morals... think that conciousness wants to return to its natural spontaneous state but all you have learned is in the way.

your personality will become stronger after the process and what now causes pain will cause pleasure and peace.

My first advice is an esoteric mantra found deep within the vedic scriptures. The crown chakra is Sahasrara. The seed sound for Lakshmi the goddess of Abundance is pronouced SHREEM. Becase Abundance also means an abundance of health, and the syllables of Sahasrara (crown are the beginnings of Lakshmi's mantra. You can balance and activate your crown by doing the mantra

Sa-Has-Ra-Ra Im (pronounced EEM)

Do this mantra once a day, 108 times for 40 days. If you miss one day, you must start the mantra over for another 40 days. But this mantra will be beyond effective.

In addition, I'd recommend you go see a chiropractor.

Three years? sounds serious.

Have you tried concentrating on all the OTHER chakras to bring them into balance. It could be some energy is blocked in ANOTHER chakra, and is causing an energy build up in another one.

I'd also try grounding yourself more, especially if massaging the area helps. Work with the root chakra to do this. You should imagine that the energy should be able to move between ALL the chakras. If theres a block somewhere the pressure build up may occcur somewhere else in a more sensitive place. I'd also try massaging the neck and upper back.

I just started doing some sound yoga about a week ago, and it's great!, Although - I got a similar problem to you - very strong persistent pain between my eyebrows. Because I was thinking about chakras because of the sound yoga I thought of the third eye. Anyway - I went to see a massage therapist and I mentioned head pain between my eyes and she suggested the neck muscles were tight. Hey presto, she massaged them and I feel loads better now. They are the ones along the top of your shoulders - apparently if they are tight you get pain right between the eyes. I'm not saying that the chakra wasn't the cause, but for treatment, stretching those muscles really helped. To relax them more permanently, strengthening the LOWER trapezius is very beneficial. Not many people know this but for pain around and between the eyes, the lower trapezius is very important for getting rid of it because it needs to be strong and toned to pull the shoulder blades down and stretch out the tight muscles of the upper trapezius and neck. To strengthen the lower trapezius all you need to do is bring the shoulder blades down and together. If you use weights you can also do this - look them up on youtube. There are probably yoga exercises too.

this is something i have seen personally.

woman was very open minded , spiritual etc etc.....really on a journey to enlightening herself more and uplifting her so ul....her one problem..she was afraid.....its natural, humans are afraid of the unknown. due to her fear.....as much as her third eye was ready to open and show her the world....she was so scared because of a few previous bad enounters...she was subconciously forcing it to stay closed...it caused headaches up the a**, sleeping issues..she was essentially fighting herself....

finally a teacher . i say a teacher because he is a very wise person in these regards....very in touch , an amazing empath, very intuitive, open etc etc.....he sat down with her and not only nurtured a little. but he sorta gave her tough love and told her to stop f***** running and let it happen, she got pissed at him..but after a hour of them going a it. he told her she was much better now...that night she experienced astrals, she felt weightless etc etc. and the headaches stopped

Yes this phase also do come in Awakening and some time it last for much time as it depends on individual to individual.
One can not determine the time phase in this process,but yes can help it by having faith and doing some more detailed practices .
It is the process towards accomplishment/Enlightenment.
